Wilson is a beautiful small city in Eastern North Carolina. According to the census of 2019, its population is only 49,459. Wilson city has many beautiful and attractive places. We will discuss the best things to do near Wilson NC and also describe some beautiful places in Wilson.

Vollis Simpson Whirlgig Park

At the nexus of art and science. The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park offers unique creative, educational, and recreational experiences. This park showcases the work of great local artist Vollis Simpson. Vollis Simpson, a farm tractor repairman, was getting close to retirement age.

He started creating enormous kinetic sculptures on his family's farm in Wilson County. He continued to create his "whirligigs" every day of the week until he died. Grants from several places, like ArtPlace America. Has helped to maintain and keep Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park and Museum open.

This park envisions the hard work and amazing creativity of Vollis Simpson. This park also offers-

  • Hand-crafted, amazing artwork.
  • Massive colorful windmills are scattered across the park.
  • Incredible pieces of folk art.
  • A lot of vendors from whom you can buy things or eat food.
  • Hosts farmers market every Wednesday and Saturday.

Children will especially love this park and its artwork. As it captures almost everyone's imagination, especially children.

Lake Wilson

Lake Wilson is another beautiful place in Wilson. This lake is an amazing place to walk. The walking trail is nice and clean. There are also beautiful benches to sit there and relax. Parking is also available in Lake Wilson.

Also, there are boat ramps and fishing facilities. So, for people who love fishing, this is an ideal place. There are picnic tables and washrooms on Lake Wilson. So, you can also come here for a picnic with family and friends. You can also play Frisbee golf here.

Lake Wilson has many different activities that people can do. Besides fishing, people can swim, kayak, canoe, paddle board, play golf, ride bikes, hike, camp, picnic, watch birds, take pictures, and so much more!

For a morning walk or a relaxing afternoon in Wilson, this place is highly recommended. It is also highly recommended to wear comfortable and supportive shoes as the walking paths are not paved.

Wilson Rose Garden

Wilson Rose Garden is a recognized public garden and one of Eastern North Carolina's most lovely destinations. The rose garden typically has a blooming period from May 1 to October 30. The roses of this garden are pretty and very well maintained.

The garden features an All America Rose Selection with many different rose bushes and varieties ranging from traditional garden kinds to today’s hybrids. Types of roses that are found here are:

  • English Roses (David Austin Roses)
  • Floribundas
  • Climbing Roses
  • Shrub Roses
  • Old Garden Roses
  • Gran di floras

In addition to the rose garden, visitors will find a number of beautiful flowerbeds filled with annuals, perennials, bulbs, shrubs, trees, and grasses. There are also many benches throughout the park where people can sit and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Many people also come here for a picnic. The smell of the blooming flowers mesmerizes the visitors. This rose garden is a wonderful place to see and learn about the many varieties of roses. Highly recommended for a walk or a picnic.

Imagination Station Science & History Museum

Located in the historic downtown Wilson, this Science museum remains open from Tuesday to Saturday.  This Museum is located in a 1928 historical building. This museum has amazing live science demonstrations. That children will especially find very interesting.

Also, this museum showcases local history and exotic animals.

There are both permanent and changeable exhibit areas at this museum. Each exhibit is intended to focus on a particular area of history, science, or technology. Each floor of the museum has a different theme.

For instance, the museum showcases reptile exhibits on the second floor. This museum also has a body-ology exhibit. Moreover, this science museum also has some exercise equipment too. And you can actually do some exercise with this equipment if you so desire.

The museum has made a lot of efforts to make this place enjoyable for kids. They’ve added a simulation situation where children have to race against animals and climb the rock. They can also play the harp without strings, see rabbits, and chinchillas, and learn many more things.

This science museum also has an observation hive. You can see the action of the bees in this observation hive. Watch the worker bees who hover around the hive, bringing in pollen and nectar. If you pay close attention, you could even spot the queen.

This place is especially recommended for kids as they have a lot to enjoy. Adults will also enjoy visiting the museum.

Fleming Stadium

Fleming Stadium is primarily used for baseball. This stadium hosts a lot of special events, especially on summer baseball days. You can also get decently priced snacks in this museum. The museum is very well maintained and clean. Fleming stadium’s seats are also covered by a huge roof that helps to block the sun and rain. If you are looking for a lazy summer evening of watching some really well played baseball, Fleming stadium is the best place to be.

NC Baseball Museum

Located within Fleming Stadium is none other than a baseball museum. The museum itself encompasses 3300 square feet and maintains displays and exhibits highlighting the history of baseball in North Carolina. All sorts of North Carolina memorabilia abounds. From professional baseball players native to North Carolina to those who have made it to the Hall of Fame to those who have actually played within Fleming Stadium! You don’t want to miss this if your a fan of America’s pastime. 

Carolina Beach

Carolina Beach is the closest beach to Wilson, North Carolina. It is only 0.3 miles from Downtown Wilson. There are fishing piers in Carolina Beach State Park, as well as the Flytrap Trail. The Boardwalk in Carolina Beach has stores, eateries, and rides.

In addition to being close to home, Carolina Beach offers many amenities. There are restaurants, shops, and activities at the Carolina Beach Pavilion. This venue hosts concerts, festivals, and special events throughout the year. There are also several golf courses nearby.

The beach is located at the end of Ocean Boulevard, which runs along the Atlantic Coastline. The beach is divided into three sections by two jetties. The first section is called the “North Jetty” and it is where most people enter the beach. The second section is called the ‘South Jetty” and this is where the ocean waves crash against the sand. The third section is called the ”West Jetty” and here the surfers ride the waves.

The Boardwalk is a great place for families with young children. There are many places to ride on the boardwalk including: the Sky Ride, the Flying Carpet, the Tilt-A-Whirl, and the Swings. The Sky Ride is an enclosed gondola that takes you up to the top of the boardwalk. You can see all of the shops below you and the ocean. The Flying Carpet is a large wooden roller coaster that goes around the entire boardwalk. The Tilt-A- Whirl is a small carousel type ride. The Swings are swings that go back and forth across the boardwalk. The boardwalk also has a lot of restaurants, ice cream stands, and other things to do.
