History

Will Shields married Karen in 1970 when he was 26 years old. His parents were a butcher and a farmer. He saw the ocean for the first time with his wife under the Avalon Pier. He was immediately in love with the ocean. His destiny called at that moment.

The couple had three children and lived in a number of towns. Some of the places they moved to include:

  • Pittsburgh
  • Maryland
  • Harrisburg
  • Richmond
  • Nags Head

One of their sons, Scott, called home one day. He proposed a business opportunity to his father. Scott wanted to open a restaurant in Nags Head. He moved to Nags Head with his wife, Melissa. In six months, Blue Moon Beach Grill opened with thirty-two seats. It gained popularity with locals and ended up expanding to Blue Water Grill & Raw Bar. The expansion gave the restaurant sixty-four seats.

Mimi's Tiki Hut

This is located on Pirate’s Cove Marina’s deck. It offers guests an outdoor seating place to hang out as they wait for their table to be ready. Guests can enjoy drinks, live entertainment and something to eat. It is an ideal spot to watch boats returning from the water.

The hut was named in honor of the 25 Annual Pirate Cove Billfish Tournament. It took place in 2018. It was named after the family’s matriarch, Miss Karen, whose grandchildren called Mimi.

The live music acts are as follows:

  • Thursdays – Gypsea Souls
  • Fridays – Q and Kerry
  • Saturdays – Randy Burton and Friends

After getting accepted to ECU, I started looking for things to do in and around Greenville, NC. However, my searches kept taking me to places in South Carolina! There must be things to do around ECU, so I started asking other students. They kept telling me to graduate and move away! This inspired me to begin exploring eastern North Carolina and build this website as a showcase of the places to go, sights to see, and things to do all over eastern NC. I have fallen in love with this region and started taking up roots here. After graduating, I didn't move away - I bought a house here and continue to explore eastern North Carolina.
