Cape Fear River Trail

The Cape Fear River Trail has paved paths that are 10 feet wide. It winds for more than 7 miles among a ton of gorgeous trees. The trail is used by a lot of people who prefer non-motorized transportation. Some of the activities you can do on the Cape Fear River Trail include:

When you visit the trail, you will enjoy spectacular views. There are numerous plants and wildlife to be spotted. The river also offers an amazing sight.

The terrain is slightly hilly and mostly flat. The trail has some wooden bridges and one covered one. You will walk over marsh and wetlands along the trail with the help of more than 1000 feet of boardwalk. There is a short connector linking the newest part of the Cape Fear River to the Linear Park Trail. It is found near Riverside Dog Park.

You will notice various interpretive signs as you walk along the trail. These help to provide some information about the numerous plant and animal life found in the region. The trail boasts more than 150 species of birds. There are about 750 species of trees and plants in the area. There is a unique collection of different hardwood trees. Some of the animals you will see on a daily basis are:

On the trail at Clark Park, you will find a trailhead that was named in honor of Moses Mathis. The trailhead is placed centrally and you will hardly miss it. The plan for these is for them to eventually connect various locations, much like the Appalachian Trail. The regions it is to connect are:

1897 Poe House

This location is named the 1897 Poe House because it was constructed in the year 1897. The home belonged to the E.A. Poe family. The head of the family was Mr. E.A. Poe. He owned the Poe Brick company and was a local businessman. Mr. Poe should not be confused with the famous author Edgar Allan Poe.

E.A. Poe married his wife, Josephine Montague Poe, in 1880. She was originally from Wake County. He placed the deed of the house in her name.

Visiting the Poe House is one of the cheap things to do in Fayetteville NC. There is no entrance or admission fee required. The facility accepts donations from those who visit. If you can, give $2 for every adult and $1 for each child that visits. You can gain more information about what life was like at the start of the twentieth century. Touring the house gives you an idea of how that era was defined by the affluent. Mr. Poe lived a rich life and his home is definitely worth exploring.

  • Sunday: Tours are available every hour on the hour. The first tour starts at 1 pm and the last begins at 4 pm.

US Army Airborne Special Operations Museum
