Cheap Things to Do in Outer Banks NC

Cheap Things to Do in Outer Banks NC

The Outer Banks is full of beautiful beaches, gorgeous islands, and great nightlife. It has a never-ending list of activities or adventures that you can go on. Being so close to the ocean is another great thing, you are never short of beautiful sunsets. Or hearing the calming sound of waves breaking on the shore. Although Outer Banks does have a lot of luxurious activities, you definitely do not need a lot of money to have fun. Let’s jump straight into this list of cheap things to do in Outer Banks NC.

Ghost Crabbing

Ghost Crabbing has to be one of the most unique and fun things you can do in the Outer Banks. All you will need is a flashlight and to be very quiet.

It is an activity held at night involving tiny, almost translucent crabs. All ages will have a great time, and it makes lasting memories. It will be easy and enjoyable for family members of all ages. Ghost crabs can be seen on the beach during the day, but the real excitement happens at night!

Ghost crabbing, though, is more of a pursuit activity, and that is something you must remember. Do not probe them. Even though crabs are little, they will undoubtedly pinch you if you try to touch them.

For some fun ghost crabbing, head over to any beach in the vicinity of the outer banks after nightfall. Kitty Hawk is my first pick because it's a quieter beach. Because ghost crabs dislike both light and sound, a darker beach, the better. You just need to be as silent as you can and have a flashlight ready.

They stop for a brief moment after the flash hits them, resembling a deer caught in the headlights. And then they bolt! This would be the ideal time for you to take some memorable pictures. So go to Kitty Hawk Beach, which is located at 3840 N. Va. Dare Trail in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Kitty Hawk Fishing Pier

There are many more outdoor entertainment alternatives on The Outer Banks.

In the summer, the majority of piers on the Outer Banks are a local favorite. This is a result of the fish being very active during the warmer months. Some are even open 24 hours a day.

Convenience stores are found in pier buildings and are typically open as late as the pier. You may buy meals, drinks, and fishing equipment from them.

Kitty Hawk Pier is a fantastic location for couples to take a romantic walk on. You can also cast your rod with the hopes of catching a large fish while taking in the sounds of the water and its aroma. The entire length of the pier is open to visitors.

If you want some cheap romance, the pier is also the perfect place for a late-night date.

At the Kitty Hawk Pier, admission is less than a pint of beer, so it will work great with your budget.

Everyone will have a great time and enjoy a family-friendly activity at the pier. Head on over to 5353 N Virginia Dare Trail, Kitty Hawk, and check it out.

The Wright Brothers National Memorial

On December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright created history. They flew their powered, heavier-than-air aircraft four times successfully. These brothers made the long journey to the Outer Banks because it had the elements that were needed. These were:

  • Wind
  • Sand, and
  • Seclusion

These elements were needed to safely and discreetly learn how to fly.

The Wright Brothers National Memorial consists of:

  • The historic sand dune where Wilbur and Orville conducted most of their gliding, and
  • The house they resided in while conducting their experiments in the Outer Banks,
  • Reconstructed 1903 Camp Buildings
  • Wright Brothers Monument
  • A Park store that sells mostly books, media, and educational games as well as all merchandise.

Head on over to 1000 N Croatan Hwy, Kill Devil Hills for this cheap thing to do in Outer Banks NC.

Elizabethan Gardens

To delight Queen Elizabeth l, fancy and beautiful gardens were created. But, this garden was not. Elizabethan Gardens were designed for your enjoyment. The garden also serves as a living tribute to Sir Walter Raleigh's lost colonists. Over 400 years ago, they called this area home.

In summer, you can expect to see a garden full of beautiful colors and truly unique flowers. During winter, this garden turns into a winter wonderland and you will think it came out of a storybook.

The Garden is also wheelchair-accessible and dog friendly. Admission is relatively cheap so don’t miss out! Head on over to 1411 National Park Dr, Manteo, NC.

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum

There is a marine museum just for shipwrecks that happen on the Outer Banks. It has also been given a really cool name. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. The museum introduces a new exhibit each year. But unlike other museums, this one right here has activities to keep you entertained.

Daily activity includes a kid and family-friendly scavenger hunt. Here, participants look for items all across the museum. They are also rewarded with a special treat for their effort. If you found this interesting and would like to know more, then check out their link. Or, head on over to 59200 Museum Dr, Hatteras, NC

After getting accepted to ECU, I started looking for things to do in and around Greenville, NC. However, my searches kept taking me to places in South Carolina! There must be things to do around ECU, so I started asking other students. They kept telling me to graduate and move away! This inspired me to begin exploring eastern North Carolina and build this website as a showcase of the places to go, sights to see, and things to do all over eastern NC. I have fallen in love with this region and started taking up roots here. After graduating, I didn't move away - I bought a house here and continue to explore eastern North Carolina.
