Cool Things to Do in Elizabeth City, NC

In 1801, the name Elizabeth City was given to this beautiful coastal city. It is now marketed as the “harbor of hospitality.” A city that averages 2 inches of snow a year, which means lots of fun in the sun!

We’re going to find out just what Elizabeth City NC has to offer.

1. Dixieland Speedway

The track is known to have started it all, packed with racing events since 1983. 3/8s of a mile, the dirt oval track has been host to many a fun-filled, exciting Friday night. Not much has changed since then when it comes to oval track racing. With long straightaways and tight turns. You can bet fans from around the region are there every Friday night. To witness the intense side-by-side racing. Just make sure to pack a cooler and a pair of shades or safety glasses to protect your eyes from the dirt.

2. Ghost Harbor Brewing Company

Situated at 602 East Colonial Avenue in the infamous historic Palins Alley. Lies the one and only, Ghost Harbor Brewing Company.

A microbrewery focused on giving its customers exciting and innovative beers.

Heading down to Ghost Harbor on any given weekend is one of the coolest things to do in Elizabeth City NC. Perfect if you’re looking for a place with cozy lighting, nearby restaurants, and live music. Enjoy it all while sipping on a cold one.

The Museum of the Albemarle has been voted the #1 place to go in the city. With entry being free, for the last 55 years, locals and tourists have visited this attraction. It is located in the heart of Elizabeth City. It showcases 10,000 years’ worth of local history. From craftsmen and farmers to Native Americans and more. This incomparable museum of history explains it all. The Museum of the Albemarle exhibits illustrations, artifacts, and hands-on activities. 7. Palins’ Alley

In order to appreciate Palins’ Alley, you need to first understand it. Known as one of the area’s first business tycoons, William Palin purchased a plot of land in the 1800s. He turned it into an industrial area which was host to:

1. Lumber warehouse

2. Oyster packaging plant

3. Rice mill

4. Shipyard

Sadly, after his passing in 1907 part of his land was donated to the city. The others turned into different businesses. By 1931, most of his hard work had vanished. The alleyway survived but was left crumpled. In 2016, Hoppin’Johnz opened its doors as the' alleyways first restaurant. Palins’Alley is now home to:

· Hoppin’Johnz

· The Mills

· Ghost Harbor Brewing Company

· Coaster’s Draughthouse

An alley speckled with plants and Edison-style lights strung above the walkway. Captivating restaurants and bars on either side. A place for fun, live music, and good food. This is now known as Palins’ Alley.

A city so beautiful, a city full of history. Who wouldn’t want to explore it?  I hope you will enjoy my list of 7 cool things to do in Elizabeth City NC.

After getting accepted to ECU, I started looking for things to do in and around Greenville, NC. However, my searches kept taking me to places in South Carolina! There must be things to do around ECU, so I started asking other students. They kept telling me to graduate and move away! This inspired me to begin exploring eastern North Carolina and build this website as a showcase of the places to go, sights to see, and things to do all over eastern NC. I have fallen in love with this region and started taking up roots here. After graduating, I didn't move away - I bought a house here and continue to explore eastern North Carolina.
