Luna Pizza Cafe Greenville NC

Williams and Jefferson

The history of Luna Pizza Café goes deep, all the way to Florence, Italy. But first, let’s go back a little further.

Richard Williams, the creator and co-owner of Luna Pizza Café in Greenville, was once a professor. He taught recreational therapy at ECU. Although he had much love for his job, he was soon to realise his passion was elsewhere.

The Meeting Point

After faculty meetings, he would always visit Carolina Ale House to debrief with colleagues. This is where he met John Jefferson who was a server at the time at Carolina Ale House and now co-owner of Luna Pizza Café. This is where their friendship began.

One night after a few cold ones, Williams asked Jefferson, hypothetically speaking, if he were to ever quit his job at the university to open a restaurant, would Jefferson come work for him? This was Williams indirectly manifesting his new reality.

Florence - Italy

Williams was blessed enough to win a teaching award from the university, which was a cash prize. After much deliberation, he knew what he wanted to do with that money. He booked a 3 week course at Biverò Pizza Academy in Florence. After learning the arts of making fermented dough and to lightly char Neapolitan pies, Williams returned home.

New Beginnings

In 2017, Williams retired from the University and decided to pursue his passion for people in a more artistic way. He then offered Jefferson a free trip to Italy to learn the same pizza-making techniques he did. By January of 2018, Williams and Jefferson opened Luna Pizza Cafe.

Menu

While in Italy, Williams realised pizza does not need to be a cheap meal experience. He had the luxury of experiencing pizza in a fine dining setup.

Local foods are used on their menu, including beautiful hydroponic greens dressed simply with vinaigrette. San Giuseppe Salami Co. in Elon produces sopressata, an Italian salami, in place of pepperoni. A shipping container's worth of flour, which serves as the foundation for the restaurant's five-day fermented dough, and San Marzano tomatoes, which Luna grinds for its pizza sauce, are also imported from Italy. The outcome is a thin, flavorful crust with a crisp exterior after cooking at high heat for roughly two minutes.

Their menu consists of some great food, but what really stands out is their Neapolitan pizza menu, Salads and their Specials.

Some items from their Neapolitan pizza side are:

  • Prosciutto & Arugula
  • Pizza Rosso
  • Shiitake Mushroom & Sausage

Their Salad items include:

  • Dressed Greens
  • Panzanella

Items from their Specials are:

  • The Cannon
  • Spaghetti & Meatballs

Luna Pizza Café was also voted to have the Best Pizza of 2018,2019,2020 and 2021.

In 2020, they were voted the best overall restaurant and in 2021 they were runner up.

What Do Others Have to Say About Luna Pizza Cafe?

I can spend hours speaking about an amazing place that sells pizza in Greenville, but why not see what others are saying about it too?

  • “I grew up in an Italian Restaurant in Queens NY.  Richard and his crew do an exceptional job with both the food quality and table service. The only concern that I have is the closing at 9pm weekdays and 10pm on weekends.”  from Guy V
  • “Every time I come the staff is so friendly and the food is always fresh and delicious! I took my dog and ate at the outdoor patio and they brought her out a water bowl and a couple pizza bones! Always a delicious and enjoyable experience… “  from Samantha T

After getting accepted to ECU, I started looking for things to do in and around Greenville, NC. However, my searches kept taking me to places in South Carolina! There must be things to do around ECU, so I started asking other students. They kept telling me to graduate and move away! This inspired me to begin exploring eastern North Carolina and build this website as a showcase of the places to go, sights to see, and things to do all over eastern NC. I have fallen in love with this region and started taking up roots here. After graduating, I didn't move away - I bought a house here and continue to explore eastern North Carolina.
