NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is located in Kure Beach. The aquarium is near the location where the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Fear River converge. It offers great marine learning experiences. It gives visitors a chance to connect with aquatic wildlife and nature. The aquarium is state-owned. It is administered by the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (NCDNCR). The Fort Fisher Aquarium has sister facilities. These are;

· The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores

· The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island

· Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head

All these aquariums inspire an appreciation for aquatic life. They encourage people to get involved in conservation issues in and around the state.

Exhibits

The Aquarium has a range of aquatic animals to choose from. There is a lot of activities to do and see. The most recent addition in the exhibits is a family of Asian small-clawed otters.

Visitors to the aquarium are able to explore the aquatic environs and habitats. Some of the exhibits include;

· Freshwater streams and swamps

· Reefs

· Coastline habitats

· Sea turtles

· Bald eagle

· Sharks

· Eels

· Fossils

· Horseshoe crabs

Tours and Adventures

The Fort Fisher Aquarium offers educational programs that are fun and entertaining. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all physical tours have been cancelled. The aquarium has virtual programs that have taken the place of physical visits. The virtual programs include;

1. Virtual creature feature

An educator at the aquarium shares information about the animals. The educator discusses a new topic each week. They tell the audience about efforts to save certain species in the wild.

The videos are open to all. They take place on Mondays at 11 a.m. They are an hour long each.

2. Virtual storytime

This is for children aged between 2 and 5. Family members are also welcome to join in.

An educator reads a story about an animal. After the story, the audience meets a live animal. There are fun activities for the children.

The videos are posted on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. and take 45 minutes.

3. Virtual behind the scenes: turtles

These are exclusive behind the scenes videos on turtles. The audience discovers what goes into taking care of the turtles at the aquarium. The tours feature species from both land and sea.

The audience is taught about wild reptiles. They also receive information on how to help protect them in the wild and at the aquarium.

The hour-long videos are for all audiences and are posted every Friday at 10 a.m.

4. Virtual behind the scenes: saving species

This category offers information on how the aquarium helps to save different species. The audience is taught about research and findings on these species. Some of the species on the videos are;

· Tiger sharks

· Carolina gopher frogs

· Larval fish

· Corals

The videos are recommended for children aged 7 and above. They are posted on Fridays at 2 p.m.

There are also some private programs that can be organized. These include;

1. Virtual animal cameos

By making an appointment, you can have a specific animal make a cameo in your video. These private cameos last for 15 minutes. The audience gets the opportunity to ask specific questions about the animal. The aquarium educator offers all required information.

This program is open to all.

Sea Turtle Exploration

The Fort Fisher Aquarium has a range of sea turtle information that is readily available. There are exciting online lessons to help students learn how to care for and protect the turtles.

The section has a “Turtle Facts” section. This provides information on the 7 sea turtle species found in the world. Students learn about these, and specifically of the 5 species found in North Carolina.

There are turtles that are so aptly named, like Womble and Shelldon. You can read the stories about these turtles. They have survived great obstacles to be able to have such incredible stories.

Sea Turtle Exploration allows students to learn and explore. It provides information on the sea turtles that live at the aquarium. The program also teaches about the various issues that these turtles face all over the world.

Events

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is a unique location for events. The grounds give a memorable and elegant backdrop for event photos. There is a special events staff ready to provide a great experience.

The aquarium borders the sea, giving it a one of a kind feel. There is adequate space to plan seating or for roaming around. Some of the events held at the aquarium include;

· Weddings

· Birthday parties

· Social events

· Corporate functions

The facilities are available during and after hours. The grounds can accommodate up to 2,000 guests. There are various location options to choose from. These include;

· An auditorium with audiovisual capabilities

· A private conference room

· Expansive classrooms

· Exhibit spaces

Admission

In order to access the aquarium, you will need tickets. These can be bought in advance at the website. North Carolina Aquarium Society members can reserve space without the need of tickets. No tickets are sold at the entrance.

Children younger than 2 years old access the grounds for free. Children between 3 and 12 years pay $10.95 while adults aged between 13 and 61 pay $12.95. Seniors and members of the military can access the aquarium for $11.95. They must however come with valid identification documents.

The Fort Fisher aquarium is a great natural option for exploration. It helps to protect and save many species of animals that may not survive without assistance.
