Caswell Memorial

History Of Caswell

At a young age, Richard Caswell's career began. In the 18th Century, surveying was a very lucrative profession. And at the young age of 17, he was chosen to be Surveyor General James Mackilwean's apprentice.

As the frontier grew, surveyors would buy newly opened land and sell tracts to settlers. This was sold at a higher price. Surveyors were viewed with suspicion by the colonists. However, Caswell was well-liked by the populace throughout his political career. Today, people who visit the Caswell Memorial can engage in practical activities. This is done by using real instruments to learn about surveying in the 18th Century.

Throughout his career, Caswell was able to work in a variety of government positions. This was before being elected to the Colonial Assembly under British rule.

At the age of 18, Caswell was appointed deputy clerk of Johnston County in 1748. A year later, in 1750, he became a surveyor general.

He presented a bill to create Kingston, North Carolina's 20th official town. He used his surveying expertise to plan the layout of the community. In modern-day Kinston. Caswell Street connects the streets bearing the names of his wives.

To sever ties to its namesake, King George III, Caswell proposed the new town name of Kinston in 1784. This was following the Revolution.

Caswell was chosen as the Senate's Speaker of the North Carolina Assembly in 1789. He had a stroke on November 5 of that year while attending Fayetteville; he passed away five days later.

You can learn more about the illustrious life of Richard Caswell. As well as his contribution to the establishment of North Carolina as a member of the United States. All of this can be seen at the Governor Richard Caswell Memorial.

So what are you waiting for? Browse through artifacts from the revolutionary war at the Caswell memorial. I know you're excited, but don't forget to take your partner. It is located at 2612 W. Vernon Ave. Kinston, NC

ENC Explorer
Author: ENC Explorer

After getting accepted to ECU, I started looking for things to do in and around Greenville, NC. However, my searches kept taking me to places in South Carolina! There must be things to do around ECU, so I started asking other students. They kept telling me to graduate and move away! This inspired me to begin exploring eastern North Carolina and build this website as a showcase of the places to go, sights to see, and things to do all over eastern NC. I have fallen in love with this region and started taking up roots here. After graduating, I didn't move away - I bought a house here and continue to explore eastern North Carolina.
