During his retirement, machine repairman Vollis Simpson experimented with the sculptures. It was unknown to him then these sculptures would evolve into whirligigs. As more and more sculptures came into being, locals and visitors came to his farm for a glimpse. Vollis struggled to keep the sculptures alive and moving as he grew older. The neighborhood banded together to advance and preserve the whirligigs. As a result, future generations today enjoy their charms.

The spectacular center has played host to several performances. They have garnered praise and prizes from prominent worldwide performers. The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park was a part of the Olympic Games' public art exhibit in 1996.
