Things to Do in Elizabeth City NC at Night

Things to Do in Elizabeth City NC at Night

Halfway between Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks lies Elizabeth City. Elizabeth city is also known as the "Harbor of Hospitality". It is home to one of the biggest U.S. Coast Guard aviation stations in the United States.

Elizabeth City was established and registered in 1793 as Redding. The next year, in 1794, it became Elizabethtown but then later changed to Elizabeth City in 1801. The name Elizabeth came from the original landowner's wife.

Elizabeth city is full of history and unique experiences. This is why it attracts tourists from all around. The nightlife is ever-growing and you will not run out of things to do in Elizabeth City NC at night. Let’s jump into some of the great scenes of Elizabeth City.

Pailin's Alley

Pailin's Alley lies in historic downtown Elizabeth City. This district builds the character of the Elizabeth city we know and love today.

William Palin was one of the region's earliest economic tycoons. He bought a piece of property in the 1800s. He then transformed it into an industrial sector that housed a(an):

  • Shipyard
  • Lumber warehouse
  • Oyster packing facility

He sadly passed away in 1907, and while some of his properties were donated to the city, the remaining were developed into various companies. Unfortunately, most of the legacy all but disappeared by 1931.

The alleyway was blessed enough to have survived but was left in a terrible state. Many years later, a small business owner refused to let history go down the drain and decided to take a chance.

Hoppin’Johnz was established in 2016. It became the first eatery in Pailin's Alley. The Alley now has four more incredible pubs and restaurants.

From rust to riches, Pailin's Alley now has a charming restaurant and bar on either side. The decor has been upgraded to Edison-style lights above the walkway. Giving it that real 80s outdoor street vibe.

From lovely plants to live music and tasty cuisine, Pailin's Alley is where you want to be spending your night.

So head on over to 606b E Colonial Ave, Elizabeth City, NC and check out Pailin's Alley.

Ghost Harbor Brewing Company

Pailin's Alley cannot be mentioned without also mentioning Ghost Harbor Brewing Company.

The one and only Ghost Harbor Brewing Company is found in the iconic Pailin's Alley. It is situated at 602 East Colonial Avenue.

Ghost Harbor Brewing Company was the city's first microbrewery. It focuses on providing its patrons with unique and intriguing beers. During the Christmas season, they team up with Muddy Waters Coffeehouse. Their joint effort produces a unique mix of beer, coffee, and chocolate to create a unique flavor. This is the type of creativity and innovation you can expect when visiting them.

On weekends you get a great atmosphere, warm lighting and close restaurants. At times there is also live music to be enjoyed while trying out one of the many craft beers from the rotating menu. Saturday nights should become Ghost Harbor night!

After getting accepted to ECU, I started looking for things to do in and around Greenville, NC. However, my searches kept taking me to places in South Carolina! There must be things to do around ECU, so I started asking other students. They kept telling me to graduate and move away! This inspired me to begin exploring eastern North Carolina and build this website as a showcase of the places to go, sights to see, and things to do all over eastern NC. I have fallen in love with this region and started taking up roots here. After graduating, I didn't move away - I bought a house here and continue to explore eastern North Carolina.
