Explore the Outdoors

With its near proximity to the Pamlico River and the surrounding beaches. There are plenty of ways to explore the area's natural beauty. Fishing, swimming, and kayaking are available for those looking for a summer thrill. There are also plenty of hiking and biking trails to explore and admire the stunning views.

North Carolina Estuarium

North Carolina Estuarium is the world’s first Estuarium. It is home to various aquatic life, including various fish species, crabs, and birds. Visitors can explore over 200 exhibits and displays. This includes a touch tank where you can get up close and personal with some creatures. While here, you can also take a guided tour of the facility to better learn about the place and its importance.

The Estuarium also hosts several educational programs and activities. It’s aimed at helping visitors understand the species and their importance. They make the learning curve fun and exciting by hosting workshops. You can also learn from lectures or get hands-on experience by performing activities.

Washington Waterfront Underground Railroad Museum

The Washington Waterfront Underground Railroad Museum depicts the history of the Underground Railroad. In the 1800s; it ran in Beaufort County. The museum tells the story of the enslaved Black Africans' quest for liberation. Plenty of sympathizers and safe houses functioned during the early 1800s. This was to aid in the liberation of slaves. The exhibit emphasizes the courage of individuals who participated in the expedition.

There is a plethora of information on the history of slavery in Beaufort County in the museum. They consist of recordings, artifacts, relics, and pictures. Besides, evaluations from visitors praise the museum's employees for their expertise. Also, there are interactive displays and activities. These include a journey on the "Freedom Train," which lets guests feel what it was like to be an escaped slave.

Goose Creek State Park

The place can be an incredible way to spend a romantic evening.

The theatre’s architecture is appealing to all. While there, you can also take a stroll through the backstage area. It is reminiscent of old age, and the place takes you back in time!

Washington Civic Center

The late 1800s saw the construction of the Washington Civic Center. It's been used for many purposes since then. These include a theatre, a library, a courthouse, and a town hall. It's recognized as a National Register of Historic Places listing. And is a prime example of Beaux Arts architecture. Various historical objects and records are also kept in the structure. These include a collection of early Washington pictures.

Nowadays, the Washington Civic Center is a major tourist attraction. Visitors can learn about the history of the city and the building by visiting this public space. There must be things to do around ECU, so I started asking other students. They kept telling me to graduate and move away!
