The North Carolina Whirligig Festival is a two-day event that features all forms of art. Including:
Whirligigs made by local artist, Vollis Simpson. The Whirligigs are 20 to 50 feet tall. The support and moving parts are made of a variety of materials, including:
To make the Whirligigs reflective at night, Simpson also cut old road signs into squares of an inch.
The festival is a neighborhood celebration of people and art in motion. This happens in Historic Downtown every year on the first full weekend in November. It showcases active artists who present works created with:
as the gallery's namesake artist did with his whimsical windmills. Which specializes in recognizing the Wilson heritage and community.
The NC Whirligig Festival is organized and carried out by a community committee. It is made up entirely of volunteers. Small business owners, bakers, ministers, salespeople, and various others serve on the committee. Each participant contributes their energy and time to the North Carolina Whirligig Festival. They do it because they care about the neighborhood. Teamwork is used to handle communications with customers and attendees.
