History

Teachers are always thinking of ways to make their student’s experiences better. Such was the case when two teachers dreamed up Jacksonville’s Zing Zumm Children’s Museum. The only other children’s museum in the region was the one in Wilmington. It is a one-hour bus trip. After spending so many years taking students to Wilmington's museum, the two teachers got an idea. They realized Jacksonville had a high number of young families. This meant there would be enough children to attend a museum in the town. Onslow County needed a children’s museum.

In 2005, together with ten other teachers, they started working on their dream. Three years later, they received a 510©3 status. This made them into a non-profit organization. They filed the required bylaws and Articles of Incorporation with the North Carolina Secretary of State. In 2008, they established a Board of Directors.

The work officially began. The museum was set up as a different kind. It focused on the needs of children and their ever-shifting attention spans. Instead of boring displays, the exhibits include fun games and interesting activities for the children.

The museum has held numerous events since its founding. In addition, it hosts fundraisers and several informal meetings.

In 2017, the museum bought the former Boomtown Furniture building. This made it possible for the museum to have enough space for several displays. It solidified the original dream and allowed the doors to open to the fun children’s museum. Officially, the museum opened on November 30th, 2018.
