Wilmington

Cameron Art Museum

We all know and love visiting the Cameron Art Museum, but did you know it wasn’t always named that? Let’s first look at some history.

The St. John's Museum of Art opened in Wilmington's central business district in 1962. It outgrew its facility after 40 years of providing entertainment for the public. The museum moved to Independence and 17th Streets in 2001.

We still have not found out how the name changed. Let’s find out!

At St. John's Museum, a woman by the name of Louise Wells Cameron volunteered for more than 35 years. Additionally, serving on the board was her husband, Bruce B. Cameron. The board made the decision to change the name following a grant of the land. Then, it became the Cameron Art Museum.

Historical occurrences, such as the civil war, have taken place on Independence Street. Confederate monuments line the museum's grounds. Those Confederate revetments were built at the Battle of Forks Road.

The outer historical events and the inner creative masterpieces are on display here. The Cameron Art Museum remembers the people who died while on its grounds. It accomplishes this yearly through a reenactment. The reenactment includes:

  • The Conflict of the Forked Roads
  • Courses
  • Displays of artillery
  • Lectures

You can enjoy the following things inside the Cameron Art Museum:

  • Changing exhibits
  • International artists

After getting accepted to ECU, I started looking for things to do in and around Greenville, NC. However, my searches kept taking me to places in South Carolina! There must be things to do around ECU, so I started asking other students. They kept telling me to graduate and move away! This inspired me to begin exploring eastern North Carolina and build this website as a showcase of the places to go, sights to see, and things to do all over eastern NC. I have fallen in love with this region and started taking up roots here. After graduating, I didn't move away - I bought a house here and continue to explore eastern North Carolina.
