The North Carolina Baseball Museum is located inside Fleming stadium. The display at this museum features the history of baseball in North Carolina. This museum has an area of over 3328 square feet. Today we will discuss some of the exhibits at this museum.

About the Museum

The museum is located inside the famous Fleming stadium of Wilson city. Fleming stadium is mainly used for playing baseball. It is also the home of the Wilson Tobs. This stadium was opened in 1939.

Fleming stadium can accommodate 3,000 people. The NC Baseball Museum gives the spectators a chance to learn about NC baseball history. Lots of special events are held in this museum. The environment of this museum is very family-friendly.

Even though the stadium was built in the 30s, it has been upgraded to modern comfort. There are also arrangements for food for the visitors. It is a very well-maintained stadium. If you are looking for a lazy summer evening watching baseball, this is the place to be.

This Baseball museum highlights North Carolina’s former Major League Baseball players. It also highlights the current Major League Baseball players. In addition, Negro players from North Carolina are highlighted in this museum.

Besides that, the players who have played in Fleming stadium are also highlighted. Some of the memorabilia of this museum include:

The Museum highlights seven “Hall of Fame” inductees from North Carolina. These 7 “Hall of Fame” inductees include:

Rick Ferell

Rick Ferell played 18 seasons from 1929 to 1947 in Major League Baseball. He has played for teams like the Boston Red Sox, Washington Senators, etc.

He was considered one of the best catchers during the 1930s to early 1940s.

Gaylord Perry

Gaylord Perry was a right-handed pitcher. He played for eight different teams in Major League Baseball from 1962 to 1983. During his 22-year baseball career, Perry was able to achieve 314 wins.

Gaylord Perry was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. He has played for famous teams like

  • Cleveland Indians
  • Texas Rangers
  • Atlanta Braves
  • San Francisco Giants

Hoyt Wilheim

Hoyt Wilheim played for several teams between 1952 and 1972. He has played for teams like the New York Giants, Chicago White Sox, etc.

He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985. One interesting thing about Hoyt is that he also fought in World War II.

Enos Slaughter

Enos Slaughter played for 19 seasons in Major League Baseball. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985. Enos Slaughter also served in World War II in 1944 and 1945.

Luke Appling

Luke Appling has played his entire career for the Chicago White Sox. Luke Appling played Major League Baseball from 1930 to 1950.

Jim “Catfish” Hunter

Jim Hunter was nicknamed “Catfish.” He played in Major League Baseball from 1965 to 1979. Jim was a pitcher for the New York Yankees and the Oakland Athletics. Jim Hunter was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987.

Buck Leonard

Buck Leonard has played in the Negro League Baseball and in the Mexican League. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. The Sporting News ranked him 47th on its list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players.

Regarding the display of native North Carolinian MLB players, one visitor wrote,

“...And almost every MLB player you can name through history has played in NC and has something here.” - Brad Davis.

The North Carolina Baseball Museum has lots of interesting exhibits. Visitors can learn a lot about native North Carolinian baseball players from here. Some of the exhibits that are shown in this museum include:

Walk of Fame

This walk of fame is a unique thing about the North Carolina Baseball Museum. It is a collection of bricks dedicated to players, fans, and their families.

Jerseys and Baseball Instruments

The museum has lots of jerseys of different players and different teams. The museum also has lots of baseball-related instruments, including:

  • Baseball Bats
  • Baseball Balls
  • Photographs of baseball teams and players
  • The old newspaper page displays information related to baseball players or teams
  • Information about various baseball teams
