After all, in the 19th century, immigrants observed St. Patrick's Day, which is usually on March 17. This is in honor of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It also works as a means to embrace their new country and respect their ancestry. Parades, food, and a little bit of partying were frequently included.

St. Patrick's Day wasn't commemorated in Ireland until much later. Now it is a national holiday, and all public offices and schools are closed. Now that you know how it is celebrated in Ireland, let’s find out how it is celebrated here. This is things to do in Wilmington NC for St. Patty’s Day.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Join in the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade event in downtown's historic district. This is to celebrate everything Irish! One of the highest populations of Irish-Americans in the country is in Wilmington.

At Fourth & King Street, the Parade begins. It continues up King Street. Rodney Square is the site of the Grandstand. The Parade finishes close to 14th Street and continues down King Street. The Post-Parade Hooley is held here in a parking lot under a big tent.

Take along a warm hat, gloves, and shoes if the weather is chilly. You should include sunglasses, suntan lotion, and a hat for a sunny day.

For those of you that don’t know who Audiomelt is, they are a rock band based in Wilmington. They combine more technical elements of current metal with classic grunge tones.

Waterline Brewing Co. - Hooley Under The Bridge

The ancient Jacobi Hardware warehouse, which is now home to Waterline Brewing. It is situated on Surry Street right next to the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. This beautiful antique building has a rich past. It was constructed in several stages during the 1930s and 1940s. They utilized rough-sawn heart-pine timbers, concrete blocks, and cinder blocks. Parts of the structure were modernized to meet contemporary needs. They have worked hard to maintain the original structure's appearance and feel though. They have a lovely:

  • Taproom
  • An outdoor beer garden
  • Plenty of parking

You can also join in on one of their tours. During these, their team will explain the brewing process. Oh, and also some of the background information and specifics of their property. But back to why we are here.

Do you have any Hooley experience? Because unless you attend an Irish Hooley, you haven't truly understood what a Hooley is! Hooley Under The Bridge is held at Waterline Brewing Company. This can be viewed as a St. Patrick's Day celebration.
