Educational Things to Do in Eastern NC

ENC (Eastern North Carolina) is the area that includes North Carolina's eastern tier. Geographically, it is known as the Coastal Plain region of the state. Today we will discuss educational things to do in Eastern NC.

Battleship North Carolina

This battleship played a great role in World War II. On April 9, 1941, this sea weapon was put into service. The ship was built according to the Washington Treaty system. The speed of the ship was 28 knots.

At that time, 2,195 enlisted persons and 144 commissioned officers were in the ship’s service. Among the 2,195 enlisted troops, 86 were marines.

 

USS North Carolina in World War II

The ship was mobilized for war after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The ship immediately moved to the Pacific to help the Allies during the Guadalcanal War. This battleship took part in each significant naval attack in the Pacific region.

In the ‘Batlle of Eastern Solomons’, this battleship took out many Japanese planes. In September 1942, a Japanese submarine torpedoed this battleship. But luckily, the ship wasn’t get heavily damaged in that submarine attack.

Some other major roles the ship played during World War II include:

  • Nine shore bombardments were conducted by the ship
  • At least 24 hostile planes were destroyed by Battleship North Carolina
  • It rescued 10 Navy Aviators in April 1944
  • The battleship also sunk a troop ship of the enemy

This battleship was able to survive many close calls in the battle. In Battleship North Carolina, ten soldiers were killed and 67 were injured in the war. The battleship was decommissioned on June 27, 1947.

Visiting Battleship North Carolina

Visiting this ship will be one of the best educational things to do in North Carolina. Visitors can learn so much from visiting this battleship. The great thing is that the ship primarily remains in WW2 configuration.

Many signs, stories, and information during the tour are available for visitors. These stories, signs, etc help visitors to see and feel what life aboard the ship must have been like.

This battleship gives visitors some idea of the life of a navy sailor and the hardships involved in it. There is also a beautiful gift shop. Here, visitors can buy souvenirs like Anchor, Battleship Teak Paring knife, etc.

Visitors can learn quite a bit about World War II from this place.

Lynnwood Park Zoo

Lynnwood Park Zoo has so many things to learn, enjoy, and explore. The park has beautiful trails for a nice walk. Visitors can see and find out about animals that they have never heard of. Visitors can also touch some animals and feed them here.

The animals are very well taken care of in the zoo. The animals' habitats were spacious and clean. Some of the animals visitors can see here include:

  • Turtles
  • Snakes
  • Zebra
  • Lizards
  • Goats
  • Peacocks 

The zoo is also full of rescued animals who would’ve died if not given proper care. Children will especially love this place. They can learn about so many animals while visiting this park.

After the rain, the paths become a little muddy. So, visitors should consider wearing rain boots if they are visiting after rain. If you want a relaxing walk while seeing beautiful cute animals, this zoo is the perfect place for you.

The Fayetteville Area Transportation and Local History Museum

This is a lovely museum in the heart of Fayetteville. The museum has excellent collections that are well interpreted and displayed. Two floors of interesting, artifact-filled displays are available at the museum.

Visitors can learn the history of Fayetteville in this museum. The collection of artifacts explains many faces of life in Fayetteville City. The museum also has some great aerial photos of historic Fayetteville. Visitors can choose between self-guided tours and guided tours.

New Bern Firemen's Museum

The goal of this Museum is to preserve New Bern's firefighting legacy. New Bern has the first officially recognized fire company in North Carolina. The museum has a great collection of firefighting items and history.

The museum has a display about the New Bern fire of the early 20th century. Some of the displays of this museum include:

  • Restored fire station
  • Antique fire trucks
  • American Lafrance’s pumper and hook
  • Two nicely restored horse-drawn steam pumpers and more

Visitors are recommended to take a guided tour. They can learn so much about the history of the fire departments of New Bern from the guide. The Museum also tells the history of rival fire companies in the city.

For kid-friendly attractions, the museum has a scavenger hunt and a play area. Visiting this museum will be a very informative tour for both adults and children.
